Province of Cuba provides quality layers for exportable Habanos

Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, May 28 (Prensa Latina) The vegueros of this central province of Cuba stand out today as the second on the island to provide quality leaves to make Habanos for the foreign market.
According to specialists from the branch, Ciego de Ávila, about 420 kilometers east of Havana, produces a layer of tobacco with a good texture, size, color and no stains.

The general director of the Florence Agricultural Company, belonging to the national group Tabacuba, Ricardo Varona, expressed that they are currently working to benefit the leaf, always complying with the hygienic-sanitary measures to face the Covid-19.

He pointed out that although they present delays in the collection of the leaf, they have already sent the industry about 10 percent of the layer, and they have all the conditions to fulfill the commitment established for this year.

The municipality of Florencia with a long tobacco tradition, has the greatest weight of the province of Ciego de Ávila in the delivery of quality layers. It has 300 farmers and two Agricultural Production Cooperatives dedicated to this cultivation with the capping technique.

The quality of the tobacco leaves destined for the manufacture of exportable cigars, has the peculiarity that almost all the cultural attention to the plains must be done manually.

In addition, with a minimum use of chemicals in fertilization and in the fight against pests and diseases and the preparation of the land, they do it with oxen so as not to compact the soil or contaminate the environment, so it must be an ecological production.

Ciego de Ávila dedicates some 700 hectares to tobacco production, more than half with the capping method and the rest sol al palo, distributed in the 10 municipalities, where there are some 575 producers.
